Light winds and NZL sailors get flooded off the water

Athens 2003 Regatta - Light winds and NZL sailors get flooded off the water
ATHENS, GREECE-(26-8-2003) There was very little racing held on day 6 of the Athens 2003 Regatta, due to the fickle weather conditions which featured a shifty onshore breeze which died completely when a thunderstorm appeared early in the afternoon. Races on the Yngling, Finn and 49er courses were abandoned, the organisers sent the Europes and Lasers ashore due to the risk of lightning strike before any races on that course began and the Mistral Boards did not leave the dock. 470s had a scheduled day off.

Only one race involving a NZL crew was completed, this was in the Tornado class, where Aaron McIntosh and Mark Kennedy finished 9th and are now 9th overall after 7 races. They were in 4th place for much of the race and continue to show they have made a big improvement and are matching the top ranked crews in this highly competitive class.

The biggest event of the day for the New Zealand team was in their hotel when four of their rooms were flooded with raw sewerage in the early hours of the morning. Team members found Roger Badham, the team meteorologist, sitting on his bed with all his gear and feet clear of the effluent, still working on his computer to produce his weather report. Manager Russell Green, who insisted on the affected team members being immediately relocated to new rooms and laid a complaint with ATHOC, was informed by the Hotel Manager that this was a normal occurrence `it happened in my house last week`.
